Back to school this morning. Something strange has happened to us. Joan could always translate a verb like no other. And I have worked for years to pronounce an “r” sound that is from the throat and have paid particular attention to making sure my “O’s”, “N’s” and “M’s” sounded like I had a bad cold–a la Francaise. However, after a week of intense French lessons, having worked harder in a week than I can remember (sorry, Roy), I have begun to channel John Wayne…”bahn jur (bonjour) and mare-see (merci).” And Joan has become a deaf mute. She walks into a place and points and grunts to get what she needs. It is exasperating! Where did we put our tongues?
On the way home from school we briefly stopped in to look at the enormous Montparnasse cemetery. De Beauvoir, Sartres, famous poets and many other important literary people are buried here. But, alas, we also found a whole family of Bastards!
